Keep Warm & Safe With A Backyard Fire Pit

We’re well into the fall season now and it won’t be long before you-know-what starts to cover the ground. But let’s not jump too far ahead – there’s still time to enjoy the outdoors and your backyard during these cooler days of autumn.

A big sweater and cozy blanket will help but there is another sure-fire way (pun intended) of adding heat and ambience to your outdoor space and that’s a fire pit!

Practical, aesthetically pleasing and suitable when it comes to local bylaws, fire pits (and fire bowls or tables) are all the rage right now.

Let’s look at why they’ve become so popular.

What Is A Fire Pit?

When you hear the term “fire pit” you may think of a dugout hole surrounded by a ring of stones used for bonfires in the country or on your camping trip. When we say fire pit, we’re talking about a beautiful backyard feature that can significantly extend your outdoor living season.

Fire pits, bowls and tables come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and styles. A structure generally made of cement, stone, metal or brick, the intent of a fire pit is to safely contain a fire and prevent it from spreading.

The table or bowl style is generally fuelled by gas as opposed to wood which makes them a great option for city dwellers.

Speaking of living in the city, it’s important to take note of your local bylaws before setting up any style of firepit – we’ll touch more on this later.

Warm Up With A Fire Pit

There’s no denying the beauty of colourful leaves and pumpkins on porches. Many people welcome the fall season. The cold, damp weather, on the other hand, may have you retreating inside.

That’s where fire pits come in! More than just a decorative feature, fire pits truly extend your outdoor living season by adding a welcoming warmth.

One of our favourite fire pits is the Dekko Element. This fire pit is a cement bowl and is available in six different colours with a variety of media choices, such as slate beach stone or black lava rock. Canadian made, this fire table is ready to heat things up on those chilly evenings with a 65,000 BTU gas burner.

Another benefit is that these fire pits are fueled by gas so there’s no need to work up a sweat gathering wood and tending the fire all night. Simply grab a cozy blanket and your hot apple cider, turn on your table and enjoy!

Friends Around The Fire

Whether it’s roasting marshmallows or having a fun singalong, a campfire is a beacon that brings people together. A fire pit is the backyard edition!

At a time where we long to be with friends and family but must exercise social distancing, a fire table or bowl is a great feature that allows you to enjoy the company of others outside.

There is no question that the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we do just about everything. While we may not be gathering in great numbers, having a warm spot to sit outside with your social bubble may be just what you need to make some great memories during these unprecedented times.

We recommend a longer fire table, like the Dekko Avera, that features either gas or propane burner.

With a variety of cement and aggregate choices, you can have the perfect centrepiece for your fall gatherings that looks good during the day and is practical and functional at night.

Safety First

Fire pits are designed to contain a fire and are easily managed, particularly if gas-fueled and controlled by a switch. However, traditional fire safety rules should still apply.

  • Keep a bucket of sand or emergency fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Ensure the fire pit is not too close to your home (follow local bylaws) or any potential hazards such as low hanging branches, fences, sheds, etc.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended near a fire pit. Even a small, controlled flame can be extremely dangerous.

Be Aware of Bylaws

The City of Ottawa allows the use of specifically designed fire pits fueled by ethanol, propane and natural gas. However, there are strict regulations on open-air wood fires.

One great option is the Cabana Coast Firepit Table which is available in a range of finishes, uses either propane or natural gas and has an optional cover.

Wherever you live, if you are considering adding a fire pit or any fire feature to your property, we encourage you to do your research and adhere to local bylaws.

Rules can vary so it’s important to become familiar with restrictions and guidelines set out for your area, not only for your safety but for the safety of those living around you.
